Provincial Fun Fair in Phuket, Thailand

If you would like to see more of our "Expat Anthology" posts, click HERE!

March in Phuket is the yearly celebration of the heroic feats of sisters Srisoontorn and Thepkasattri who stopped the Burmese invasion by basically pretending to be men. I´m not going to get into it, but if you feel like learning more...here you go: A post about it on Jaime´s Phuket Blog

After all the shows and official celebrations which we missed because they are after kiddo´s bedtime, there is a fun fair at the empty lot next to the Heroines´monument. For about two weeks we watched from our side of the road, how the tents were put up and the games put together. Until finally one Sunday it all came alive and we got all our courage to cross the road, found the perfect crossing spot and dove into a wonderful provincial fun fair madness. Needless to say that the 9 days the fair lasted, we went six times. Big Kiddo wanted to ride the mini ferris wheel and eat cotton candy every time.

There were plenty of things to eat of course, roasted quail, moo ping, red chicken, you name it they had it. Kiddos had fried crickets... I got them the little ones, the huge ones are too much to handle... My favorite snack was an orange juice slushee (with salt of course, cause you can´t get it any other way) The fresh rice crackers with caramel were really good too.

There were these games where you had to fish out little eggs with numbers in them. Obviously the majority of the eggs had the cheapest prizes. I now have plenty of cheap combs and rice spoons. And some useless stuffed animals. There was also a stall that sold little rabbits and clothing for them. They also had some guinea pigs and believe it or not also some porcupines. I thought that was cute but also kind of tragic since the kids that took those home probably got bored of their new pet pretty quickly.

After day 4, the kids pretty much felt like they owned the place and it was harder to keep them under control. Since they knew where everything was, they just went off and I was torn in two directions while trying to not loose the stroller! They rode all the trains, got on all the bouncy castles, saw all the fishes in the baby pools, got an ironman balloon, fell face first on the ground from running too fast and of course every night was a total endeavor to get them back home!
