I have been writing about my family’s Adventures in Worldschooling through Travel and Art since 2013. Take a seat and have a look around.

Moving to a new country can bring about a whole range of worries and apprehension so it’s vital that you and your family are protected while you’re traveling. The primary focus should lie at your finances and insurance, especially when you have children with you. From helping your kids get over jet lag to ensuring they have adequate medical protection while living in another country, there are many layers of protection you can organize your family for, and here’s just some ways you can get everything covered.

Get prepared before you leave

Traveling doesn’t necessarily mean you have to walk around fearing the worst but it helps if you can be as prepared as possible before you leave. Regardless of which country you’re relocating to, you should discuss any safety issues with your children before you leave without scaring them. The advice that they shouldn’t talk to strangers isn’t going to be enough as everyone will be a stranger but instead encourage them to take common sense precautions. As a parent, do your research into things like whether the water is safe to drink or if you need insect repellent by the crate!

Take out insurance

This one should be top of your list so that you’re ready for any eventuality. Taking out an insurance policy means you have peace of mind for you and your family and can avoid any financial hardship should anything happen through illness, accident or even loss of life. There are many different types of insurance to consider which range from getting quotes for health insurance, life insurance and even income protection insurance. Ensure that any cover you take out adequately covers you and reflects the circumstances your family is about to embark on.

Cultural differences

Moving abroad is an exciting new adventure but it doesn’t come without its challenges. As with anyone, relocating to a new country will expose your children to different cultures and customs. Make sure you explain and educate to your offspring the contrasting issues that could cause potential pressures for them; even staring at someone for too long can offend someone from a different culture. Read and share other expat blogs about different cultures so they’ll understand to respect different laws and customs.

If something does arise then as a family you will all deal with it but you shouldn’t despair if it does; use the opportunity to become closer through this unexpected shared experience.
